Choosing Between Bolster, Cave, Tent and Raised Beds
Room notes · Bed shapes
The easiest starting point is to notice where your pet already rests. Do they lean into a cushion, tuck under furniture, or stretch across an open patch of floor? Let that observation guide the shape.
Bolster beds: an open place to lean
Bolsters add a soft edge around part or all of a bed. They make a defined resting spot beside a sofa or in a bedroom while leaving the top open. Look at whether the front edge is lower and how much room the surrounding cushion takes away from the center. A round nest and a rectangular sofa bed can feel quite different despite similar outside measurements.
Cave beds: a little overhead cover
A cave or hooded bed adds cover over part or all of the cushion. This can suit a pet that voluntarily seeks a tucked-away resting spot. Check the entrance, internal height if provided and whether the cover is flexible. Keep the opening clear and let the pet approach and leave freely. Do not assume a closed design is suitable simply because the overall base fits.
Tent beds: a nook with a defined shape
Tents use poles or another support structure to hold fabric above the resting area. Their footprint and height may take more room than a low soft bed. Check whether a cushion is included in the specific option you choose. Assemble according to the instructions and inspect poles, fastenings and fabric before use. Position away from walkways so the structure stays undisturbed.
Raised beds: a surface above the floor
Raised designs use a frame to support a fabric panel or resting platform. Some fold for storage; others are intended to stay in one place. Consider the full frame width, entry height and stability on your floor. Do not treat a raised bed as a restraint or assume a weight capacity that has not been provided. Avoid using on an unstable or elevated surface.
Make cleaning part of the decision
Think about what you can regularly remove, wash or wipe down. A washable cover, a hand-washable panel and a whole-bed machine-wash instruction are different care methods. Follow the details for your selected bed. Let cleaned parts dry fully before reassembling, and inspect seams and fastenings as part of routine care.
Bring shape and size together
Once you have a shape in mind, use our Size Guide to compare your pet’s resting pose and your floor space. A bed should make sense in the room and leave enough space for your pet to turn, enter and leave without being crowded.
