How to Choose the Right Pet Bed Size

Room notes · Sizing

A good fit starts with your pet’s favorite resting position, not a breed name or a size letter. Take a few measurements before choosing a bed.

1. Measure a real resting pose

Wait until your pet settles naturally. Measure nose to the base of the tail for a stretched-out pose, or the full length and width of their curled shape. Include the space their legs usually take up. If they switch positions, measure the largest pose you want the bed to accommodate. Do not force your pet into position to measure.

2. Leave space to change position

Use that measurement as a starting point and allow extra room for turning and stretching. The amount depends on your pet’s habits and the structure of the bed. A side sleeper often needs more open floor area than a pet who curls into a circle.

3. Read the dimensions for your selected option

Overall dimensions include the outside of walls, bolsters or frames. They do not necessarily tell you the usable sleeping area. A 24-inch bolster bed can have less room inside than an open platform with the same outside width. For a covered bed, check height and the opening as well as the base.

Compare the dimensions in inches and centimeters on each product page. One inch equals 2.54 centimeters. Size names such as M and L only describe options within that particular design; they are not consistent across the range.

4. Mark the footprint in your room

Use a tape measure or removable floor markers to outline the bed’s overall footprint. Check that doors can open, the frame does not block a walkway and the pet can approach the entrance freely. For raised beds, include the full base and frame rather than only the fabric panel.

5. Consider the way they enter

Look at entry height and the amount of surrounding structure. An open front may suit a pet that steps straight onto a cushion; a covered nook makes more sense for a pet who already chooses enclosed spaces. Do not infer a load limit from dimensions. Only use a weight rating when the product provides one.
